At Somerset, it’s all about community. That’s the way it’s always been here.

Long before Somerset was ever envisioned, a family settled here and established a farm, one planted with rows of cotton, hay and corn. The farm was anchored by a large family home, with a wide front porch, surrounded by shade trees with hammocks and swings underneath. In a time and a place without electricity.

The home was the gathering place for neighbors and friends from miles around. More often than not, visitors would arrive at dinner time to socialize and eat. They’d relax on the cool front porch, laughing and telling stories, and try to escape the summer heat. While the kids played on the big front lawn.

A young boy – Charles Junior -grew up here, raised by his grandparents when his mother died in childbirth. It was an idyllic time for young Charles and his friends. They’d run from yard to yard all summer long, playing baseball in the empty fields, fishing in the neighborhood stream, or just twisting lazily on a swing under a tree. The day would end with a hearty meal at a friendly neighbor’s house. One strategically selected as the home with the best desert.

Of course, life in this era was a challenge for everyone, so Charles had to earn his keep. One of his chores was to mow the huge front lawn – with a push mower – and trim the tall hedges surrounding the property – with a hand clipper. It was a big job for a small boy, and one that took hours in the hot summer sun. But one he did so well the neighbors took notice. And hired him to mow their lawns.

Times have changed, and the family has moved away. Young Charles went on to attend college, serve in the military, and become a prominent citizen in his community.

But even though the farm is long gone, the sense of community still remains. Only now it’s a place for you and your family to gather; on your own front porch, or with friends and neighbors at the community center. It’s time to create your own memories – here at Somerset.
